Text Box:

Publishing Books that Look at the World from a Different Angle

Text Box: Thank you for your interest in submitting a manuscript to Dog’s Eye View Media (DEVM).

DEVM is not a vanity press or self-publishing company.

We publish one to three manuscripts per year by outside writer and encourage writers who think outside the publishing box. We are closed for book submission through 2010, but open to chapter submissions for an anthology project. See the Call for Authors below.

Please query first via email only. Do not send unsolicited manuscripts. We simply do not have the manpower to read and return every unsolicited manuscript we receive. Impress us most by showing you respect our time. Read and following our guidelines. Query: KathyS@DogsEyeViewMedia.com

Please note: DEVM does NOT publish any fiction, poetry or religious material. We also tend to stay clear of sticky sweet/sentimental prose. We have a strong slant towards books about animals, nature, volunteerism, and travel. Throughout 2010 - 2011 we would like to see travel titles focused on volunteering to support our growing network on this subject. These may be guides, humor & misadventures, memoirs, anthologies, etc. Surprise us with a new angle!

Query Tip: Be literate while not sweating all those nerve racking details of standard query letters. Just tell us about your title, why you are qualified to write it and specifically how you plan to help in marketing/promoting your book. DEVM will let you know if we need more information.

Call for Authors

Nola Lee Kelsey and Dog’s Eye View Media are now taking chapter (stories, educational articles) submissions for our next anthology. Please feel free to cross-post this announcement.

Project
Anthology on Voluntourism (volunteer travel)

Word count:
600 – 2,000

Subject
Volunteering experiences from all types of travel projects (humanitarianism, conservation, archeology, building, family trips, budget, high-end, tour combos, animal rescue, do it yourself, organized tours, etc) and travel advice focused on voluntourism.

Pay
$75.00 (US), a $25.00 Kiva Gift Certificate, 1 book copy and as much shameless promotion of our authors and their featured charity/volunteer project as we can get away with. In addition a brief author bio will appear in the book along with a link (live links in ebook versions) to the author’s choice of a volunteer project to promote. Author’s payments and gift certificates will be mailed (or sent via Paypal for authors outside the USA) between January 15 and January 31, 2011. Books will be shipped 2-4 weeks prior to the release date.

Authors are also given the first opportunity to appear as expert sources when The Voluntary Traveler Podcast is covering a story that matches the authors experience and background. In addition, DEVM frequently networks with other media outlets. When media is looking for subjects/experts on voluntourism every attempt is made to promote our writers as contacts if we feel there is a good match on the subject being covered (with author approval, of course). We are a small company and firmly believe that promoting our authors is one of the best means we have of promoting our books.

Deadline for Submissions
August 1, 2010

Pub Date:
March 3, 2011

Acceptance notification
Authors whose stories are accepted for publication as a chapter in this collection will be notified via email on or before September 1, 2010. A written release will be attached to the notification and must be signed and returned to Dog’s Eye View Media by September 15, 2010.

Rights
Priority will be given to articles not previously published, but exceptions will be made for well written works. If a story (or nearly identical story) has been previously published (in print or online), the author is required to inform Dog’s Eye View Media at the time of submission and the author MUST be the right’s holder – and must not have previously granted all rights to another publications or online entity.
Dog’s Eye View Media only asks for one-time rights; however we request that if your story (or nearly identical story) is accepted that it not then be submitted for publication elsewhere in the North America, Europe or anywhere online until after March 3, 2012. We also reserve the right to reprint stories in full and excepts for promotional purposes of the book and of the Volunteer Before You Die Network until December 31, 2012. Whenever possible a link to the author’s bio, work and/or charity will be included in reprints.

Who may submit articles/stories?
Dog’s Eye View Media welcomes novice writers along with seasoned professionals. Submissions must be well crafted, edited and nonfiction. Submissions from voluntourism industry professionals, travel providers, guides and the like are welcome, providing they are not advertorials for your company or programs.

Tips
We are looking for the best stories of voluntourism and the editor, Nola Lee Kelsey, loves diversity. Think outside the box. Focus on a moment in time that changed your life or rant about a humorous misadventure in its entirety. Offer advice or provide solace. Have you led volunteer groups and seen perceptions altered in mass? Traveled with a teen? Taught tennis to the blind? Did you build a project from the ground up? This book will be similar in scope to the front half of The Voluntary Traveler: Adventures from the Road Best Traveled. Buy or flip through a copy at your local Borders Bookstore if you’d like to get a feel for the diversity reflected in the chapters from the original book. However, we are setting the bar much hirer that in previous publications, so respect the craft of writing and take the time to do it well.

Know your market. Learn more about the voluntourism network at: www.VolunteerBeforeYouDie.com

Sending it in
Submissions are accepted via email only (attached as an MS Word formatted doc) and must include the authors name, email address, country of residence, bio up to 150 words and a link to the nonprofit or volunteer program you would like to promote.  Don’t feel you have to promote yourself as a writer if you are not one. If you are a teacher or cowboy who was just inspired to tell a story that is great. Ordinary readers will enjoy the connection to everyday people.

Remember you are writing for a book format, not a website, so take time to be descriptive, do not skip a space with each paragraph... Submissions in all capital letters will not be read or responded to. Unlike in previous books the editor is unable to offer any extensions on the deadline or August 1, 2010.

Submit your work to: Nola@DogsEyeViewMedia.com

Note
The authors whose work appeared in the original version of The Voluntary Traveler donated their stories for little more than a bio, link and some promotion of their work and the charities they volunteered for. It is through their generosity that the foundations of the Volunteer Before You Die™ Network were established.

While writers are still not getting rich by being published in our little works, the network is growing. As long as we continue to open the eyes of readers to the vast diversity of ways to do good while they journey along the road best traveled, I am confident we will continue to grow.

If you have read all the above information and have further questions about sending a submission please contact: info@DogsEyeVeiwMedia.com
